Iconic Aussie musical 'Priscilla Queen of the Desert' gets the bus back on the road in Sydney this May!
Next month, Australia's most successful homegrown musical Priscilla Queen of the Desert returns to the Sydney stage.
This time the much-loved show, based on the Oscar-winning film, will be shaking its groove thing for a limited season at The Concourse, Chatswood on Sydney’s North Shore from May 15 to 30.
Presented by award winning Sydney group, Willoughby Theatre Company, the iconic glitter filled show, features a dazzling array of more than 1000 costume pieces, almost 100 headdresses and a nonstop parade of some of the biggest dance floor hits of all time including It’s Raining Men, I Will Survive, Go West, Colour My World, Boogie Wonderland, I Love the Nightlife, Finally, a medley of Kylie classics and many more.
Based on the Oscar-winning film, Priscilla is the hilarious adventure of three friends who hop aboard a battered old bus bound for Alice Springs to put on the show of a lifetime. Their epic journey is a heart-warming story of self-discovery, sassiness and acceptance.
The show production team includes some of Sydney’s leading names in community musical theatre including Director Adam Haynes (Director Catch Me If You Can, Funny Girl, Falsettos, The Full Monty), choreographer Janina Hamerlok (Director Sweet Charity, 42nd Street, A Chorus Line and Choreography Chicago, The Boy from Oz, Cats) and Musical Director Jeremy Curtin (performer in Shrek, 42nd Street, Evita).
Filling the iconic high heels of the story's central three drag queens is Glenn Morris as Bernadette, Brett Dolahenty as Tick and recent WAAPA graduate Tom Gustard as Adam.
Director Adam Haynes said: “We couldn’t have asked for a better cast. The on stage chemistry between our three leads has made the rehearsal period a delight for the production team. They have gelled as a trio and are backed by a wonderful support cast and talented ensemble.”
Glenn Morris has played some of the biggest roles in musicals across community theatre including Jacob “The Maid” from La Cage aux Folles and Bobby Child from Crazy For You.
After recently stepping away from his 32 year career as a flight attendant with Qantas, he is relishing the chance to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Terence Stamp from the film and the great Aussie stage star Tony Sheldon as Bernadette. Glenn explains: “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to play such a well loved and iconic role from stage and screen. To be part of such a heartfelt, but hilarious story that means so much to so many people is a career defining moment. I can’t wait to put on the heels, tuck things away and head to the outback next month.” At the heart of the show's design is the big pink bus. It’s a showstopping set piece that has had audiences internationally cheering as it makes its grand entrance, and this production is set to bring the iconic moment to life in a fresh and stunning way. To bring the overall vision of the show's Director Adam Haynes to life, Willoughby engaged multi award winning Queensland designer Josh Mcintosh to develop and construct the bus. Adam Haynes added: “We are so fortunate to have someone of Josh’s experience, talent and expertise to work with us to bring this show to life. “We can’t wait for audiences to see his spectacular designs, including the bus which we know will create an impact from the moment it arrives on the Concourse stage. “Along with the bus we have some eye popping and colourful over the top costumes to deliver the outrageous elements of this show that helped make the show a smash hit success across the world.” Willoughby Theatre Company’s production of Priscilla Queen of the Desert: The Musical plays at The Concourse, Chatswood (NSW) from May 15 – 30.
